Text reads "Welcome Derek Tys to the role of InterLink Mental Health Practitioner. The word InterLink is the logo for InterLink- the word in yellow except for the i's which are in purple and the i in Link has connected loops instead of a dot. Photo is of Derek Tys. Derek is a middle aged balding pale skinned gentleman with a grey beard. he is wearing glasses. He has kind eyes and a gentle smile. he is wearing a dark patterned shirt.

Derek is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and therapist with a deep commitment to supporting individuals through trauma, grief, and the search for meaning. His practice is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and a belief in the transformative power of insight even in the face of long-held pain.

Drawing on a diverse range of therapeutic modalities including EMDR, Flash Technique, and PBSP (an attachment-repair method championed by Bessel van der Kolk in The Body Keeps the Score), Derek helps clients reconnect with their sense of self-worth and emotional resilience. He also incorporates Transpersonal, Jungian, Art Therapy, and Sandplay approaches to explore identity, existence, and the deeper layers of human experience.

Derek has a particular interest in working with intersex individuals and those navigating complex journeys to heal trauma. He offers a safe, affirming space to explore the impacts of trauma, societal expectations, and the search for authenticity. His practice honours the unique challenges and strengths that come with living outside binary norms, and he approaches each person’s story with respect and openness.

Derek shared this message of hope and healing: “Trauma is something that affects many people and for some it is debilitating: insomnia, distress, grief, addictions, triggers, social anxiety, loss of confidence, relationship issues, life meaning, self-worth, etc. You’ve lived with it for so long, but just imagine the possibility of sharing the burden, gaining understanding, and feeling freedom as you’re released from it. I am here to understand you, to listen respectfully, and to assist in finding what’s right for you.”

Derek’s favorite sayings reflect his therapeutic philosophy:

“I like a good mystery to understand and solve.”

< blockquote >“I sometimes see myself as a ‘fatal optimist’—I believe healing and insight are always possible, even when others think not.”

Whether you’re seeking relief from trauma or exploring questions of identity and belonging, Derek offers a space where your story is honoured and your healing journey is supported. InterAction welcomes Derek Tys to the InterLink team.
