Background
InterAction for Health and Human Rights brings together two leading national intersex-led organisations: Intersex Peer Support Australia (IPSA) and Intersex Human Rights Australia (IHRA).
We are an independent, not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, registered as Intersex Human Rights Australia Ltd. We were first registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) on 6 May 2010.

As a charitable organisation, we are also registered under the name Intersex Human Rights Australia with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

On 7 February 2014, we received endorsement by the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient and Public Benevolent Institution, under item 1 of the table in section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, as a registered public benevolent institution. This means that donations are tax deductible for donors. This status was backdated to 3 December 2012. We have GST, Income Tax and FBT exemptions dating from 1 January 2011. These are recorded in the Australian Business Register.
Our business names, InterAction for Health and Human Rights, InterAction DownUnder, Intersex Australia, and OII Australia, are associated with Intersex Human Rights Australia Ltd and registered with ASIC. Our incorporated company name changed to Intersex Human Rights Australia Ltd from Organisation Intersex International Australia at a Special General Meeting on 4 March 2018 and this change of name was approved by ASIC on 5 March 2018.
Intersex Peer Support Australia is a registered business name of the AIS Support Group Australia, Inc. (AISSGA), which is uniting with IHRA to form InterAction for Health and Human Rights. AISSGA is an incorporated association in Victoria. Intersex Peer Support Australia began in 1985 in the Royal Children Hospital in Melbourne. We became peer-led in 1996 and peer support gatherings followed soon after in Brisbane and Sydney. We have held a national support conference almost every year for the last 23 years. In 2001 we legally incorporated as the AIS Support Group Australia Inc. and in 2018 became a registered Health Promotion Charity. In 2019, we registered Intersex Peer Support Australia as our business name. Governance information for Intersex Peer Support Australia will be integrated into this website in 2025.
We have received Equivalency Determination certification from NGOsource/TechSoup. As of 27 April 2024, our certification is valid through to 30 June 2025.

2024
- Following a long consultation period, members of Intersex Peer Support Australia voted to unite with Intersex Human Rights Australia in a special resolution at its Annual General Meeting.
- Our business name InterAction for Health and Human Rights was registered and, later, adopted as the principal name for our united organisation.
- The process of uniting our organisations is expected to conclude in 2025, and this will be reflected in our governance and websites.

2018
- A Special General Meeting was held on 4 March 2018 to change the name of the company from Organisation Intersex International Australia to Intersex Human Rights Australia. The name change was approved by members present and via proxy. The new name was added to our list of trading names at ACNC on the same day. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission approved our change of name on Monday 5 March 2018, and the name registered at ACNC was subsequently also updated. Read our media statement.

Policies and procedures

Directors and staff
We are managed by a board of directors. Under our constitution, board members are appointed annually at Annual General Meetings. Directors may be coopted between those meetings, to serve until the next AGM. We also have a small number of part-time staff.
